![]() | 29/06/09 House Passes Historic Waxman-Markey Clean Energy Bill On Friday 26th June 2009, The House of Representatives passed the landmark American Clean Energy and Security Act, sponsored by Rep. Henry A. Waxman, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Edward J. Markey, Chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. This is the first time that the US House of Representatives has voted on climate legislation. The House vote is the first step in a two-stage process. For the Bill to become law, a similar Bill must now pass the Senate widely regarded as the much greater challenge where political and regional differences are even more pronounced. Chairman Markey said: “Today the House has passed the most important energy and environment bill in our nation’s history. Scientists say that global warming is a dangerous man-made problem. Today we are saying clean energy will be the American-made solution. This legislation will create jobs by the millions, save money by the billions and unleash investment in clean energy by the trillions.” |

![]() | 20/04/09 GLOBE President addresses the President of Austria & Governor of Bank of Austria at a Club of Rome Preparatory Meeting for the GLOBE Rome Forum Following an opening address by the President of Austria and the Governor of the Austrian National Bank, to an expert meeting of the Club of Rome, the President of GLOBE International, said: '...we are only tinkering with business as usual and need to make the deep structural changes required to set the world upon a path to address the interlinked challenges of climate change, energy secuirty and ecosystems decline on land and sea.' The meeting was organised by the Club of Rome to prepare a keynote session at the GLOBE Rome G8+5 Legislators Forum to be held in June in the Italian Chamber of Deputies. |
![]() | 17/04/09 Launch of the International Commission on Climate and Energy Security Speaking ahead of the launch of the International Commission on Climate and Energy Security, GLOBE's President, said ‘GLOBE will be convening some of the most senior legislators in the world in Washington DC at the end of March. The Commission has been charged to report ahead of the crucial Copenhagen UNFCCC COP. It is intended that the Commission will provide the context for an informal engagement between national legislators that can be closely relayed to the leaders of the major economies. Fundamentally, the Commission needs to help to create the political conditions for success at COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009.” |
