29/06/09 GLOBE Rome G8 +5 Legislators Forum One hundred senior legislators from around the world met in Rome over on June 11th and 12th, 2009 and announced that developed countries should transfer at least USD 90-140 billion per year to the developing nations for mitigation technologies and adaptation.

29/06/09 Gordon Brown calls for Global Climate Change Fund In his manifesto for December's summit on climate change in Copenhagen, Gordon Brown calls on developed countries to take on mid-term binding emissions reduction commitments and to contribute around USD100 billion per year towards the costs of mitigation and adaptation in developing countries.

29/06/09 House Passes Historic Waxman-Markey Clean Energy Bill On Friday 26th June 2009, The House of Representatives passed the landmark American Clean Energy and Security Act, sponsored by Rep. Henry A. Waxman, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Edward J. Markey, Chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. This is the first time that the US House of Representatives has voted on climate legislation. The House vote is the first step in a two-stage process. For the Bill to become law, a similar Bill must now pass the Senate widely regarded as the much greater challenge where political and regional differences are even more pronounced. Chairman Markey said: “Today the House has passed the most important energy and environment bill in our nation’s history. Scientists say that global warming is a dangerous man-made problem. Today we are saying clean energy will be the American-made solution. This legislation will create jobs by the millions, save money by the billions and unleash investment in clean energy by the trillions.”

19/05/09 New President of GLOBE International Elected The Rt Hon Stephen Byers MP, former UK Cabinet Minister for Trade & Industry, has been elected as the new President of GLOBE UK. As GLOBE UK holds the Presidency of GLOBE International Mr Byers has also become President of GLOBE International. Please find below a short biography of Mr Byers. Mr Byers will be closely supported in this role by the Rt Hon Malcolm Bruce MP, Chairman of the UK Select Committee for International Development, and Lord Michael Jay, former head of the UK Foreign Office and the UK's G8 Sherpa in 2005 & 2006. 20/04/09 GLOBE President addresses the President of Austria & Governor of Bank of Austria at a Club of Rome Preparatory Meeting for the GLOBE Rome Forum Following an opening address by the President of Austria and the Governor of the Austrian National Bank, to an expert meeting of the Club of Rome, the President of GLOBE International, said: '...we are only tinkering with business as usual and need to make the deep structural changes required to set the world upon a path to address the interlinked challenges of climate change, energy secuirty and ecosystems decline on land and sea.' The meeting was organised by the Club of Rome to prepare a keynote session at the GLOBE Rome G8+5 Legislators Forum to be held in June in the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

17/04/09 Launch of the International Commission on Climate and Energy Security Speaking ahead of the launch of the International Commission on Climate and Energy Security, GLOBE's President, said ‘GLOBE will be convening some of the most senior legislators in the world in Washington DC at the end of March. The Commission has been charged to report ahead of the crucial Copenhagen UNFCCC COP. It is intended that the Commission will provide the context for an informal engagement between national legislators that can be closely relayed to the leaders of the major economies. Fundamentally, the Commission needs to help to create the political conditions for success at COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009.”

09/03/09 Select Committee Chairs write to the Prime Minister calling for leadership to put the UK at the forefront of the low carbon revolution  The Times newspaper today printed a joint letter from the Rt Hon Elliot Morley MP (Labour), Chair of the Select Committee on Energy and Climate Change; Rt Hon Tim Yeo MP (Conservative), Chair of the Environment Audit Select Committee; and Rt Hon Malcolm Bruce MP (Liberal Democrat), Chair of the International Development Select Committee, calling for international leadership underpinned at home with a budget promise to increase the low carbon element of the UK's stimulus package to a minimum of 20 per cent.

29/01/09 GLOBE & Club of Rome Challenge the G20 Following a two day dialogue between GLOBE and the Club of Rome addressed by Mr. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC and Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, UK Secretary of State for Climate and Energy and GLOBE's President challenged the G20 Chairman, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown MP, to ensure the London G20 Summit addresses the inter connected challenges of the economic crisis, climate change, energy security and ecosystems decline.
